Have you ever wondered what it would be like to pack up everything and move overseas from a relatively small city like Perth to a big city?

And by big city, we mean THE big city, or “Big Apple” as it’s affectionately known, New York.

Well, that’s exactly what Royal IT’s founder, Lee McCaw, and his partner Tanya McCaw, also the CEO of Royal IT, did 2 years ago. And, they haven’t looked back…

The First Home of Royal IT

It all started on a Perth road close to Royal IT’s heart, one that any East Perth dweller would know, Royal street. This inspired the name for Royal IT’s first office, which remains 9 years later.

And ever since its doors first opened, Lee and Tanya have worked extremely hard to build a business worthy of such a strong name, bringing megabytes of creativity, passion, innovation, and most importantly IT expertise, to their clients’ outsourced IT solutions.

Royal IT Takes on the US

With the success of the Perth business and a strong desire to live abroad after backpacking around the world for two years, Lee and Tanya bit the bullet and made the 26hr flight to NYC, their new home, where they opened their second Royal IT office.

It’s the city that steals hearts, where they say dreams are made and life and business never stops.

“We came to NYC for a holiday 5 years ago and instantly fell in love with the energy of this amazing city. There are so many interesting, talented and diverse people compacted together – it really does inspire me on a daily basis to evolve and become a better version of myself,” said Tanya in her Startup story with the Australian Women in New York (AWNY) a social and cultural program of the Australian American Association.

Beyond their personal love of the city, opening an office in the NY made good business sense and aligned with their ambitious long-term goals for Royal IT.

“From a business perspective, we have always dreamed big: our goal is to open 5 international offices. By moving to the US we are able offer an exceptional service that is 24×7 because we have international teams that are on opposite time zones.”

Embracing the NYC Lifestyle

Joining AWNY is one way Tanya has sought help to transition into NYC living by connecting with fellow Aussie women of all ages and backgrounds who now live in New York. It helps to have friendly faces you can turn to and share experiences and tips on NYC living as an expat.

“The first 12 months I definitely wasn’t in my comfort zone and was trying to get a grasp of the unique way everything is done in this city. I worked really hard on putting myself out there to develop new friendships and networks and after a while it started to pay off,” says Tanya.

Tanya is now using her membership to give back to the city that’s welcomed her, by joining their charity committee. This year AWNY is supporting the Dwelling Place of NY, a privately funded transitional residence for homeless women run by The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.

Immersing herself in different initiatives, projects and networks in her new city has helped Tanya build her dream lifestyle in NY and make it her second home.

“Now I find that I am out most nights of the week either socializing, attending workshops or networking events. I love it!” said Tanya. “I have always wanted to own my own business since I was a teenager, and now that I am realizing this dream with my life partner I feel blessed as we really complement each other.”

While Lee and Tanya have fully embraced their new fast-paced NY lifestyle, their Aussie roots remain strong as ever and both offices are critical to their operation.

“Our whole team in Australia is involved with the servicing our NYC clients in one way or another, which is really exciting.”
